Huang is well-known for his research on the syntax of Chinese. The proposals in his doctoral dissertation ‘Logical Relations in Chinese and the Theory of Grammar’ (1982), e.g. Condition on Extraction Domain (CED) and LF-movement of in-situ wh-phrases, have significant implications for the development of formal syntactic theories and linguistic typology.
